ARMD Prevention

There are strategies that any individual can employ, in order to reduce the likelihood of developing ARMD in later life, but there is no guarantee that despite all this, you will not develop the disease.

Strategies include:

  1. Stop smoking
  2. Have a healthy diet rich in anti-oxidants (such as cabbage, kale, spinach, broccoli, etc. i.e.dark, green vegetables)
  3. Control cardiovascular risk factors such as blood pressure, cholesterol
  4. Maintain an optimum weight
  5. Exercise regularly

In addition to prevention, one of the most important factors in success of treatment if you do have ARMD is to detect it early, and therefore regular eye tests by your optician are important, particularly as we get older. Further, if you develop any of the symptoms of ARMD, then should be seen promptly either by your optician or by your ophthalmologist.
